What Are Dentures?

Missing teeth can significantly impact your self-confidence and negatively affect your oral health by shifting your remaining teeth out of place. If you're looking for a way to improve the functionality and appearance of your smile, dentures may be perfect for you. Dentures consist of artificial teeth that are placed on a natural-looking pink acrylic base. They're popular for their natural appearance and can be secured with suction, adhesive, metal clasps, or dental implants.

How Dentures Can Benefit You

Dentures make a positive impact on countless patients' lives each year. You may require dentures if you are missing multiple teeth throughout an arch, which can cause your remaining teeth to degrade quicker over time as they overcompensate for any missing teeth. Also, if you have gaps in your teeth, you know how it can affect everything from pronouncing certain words to chewing foods. Dentures can close gaps in your smile and restore your bite's impaired functionality. Dentures can be an ideal solution for your smile, whether you have severely damaged or lost teeth.

Our Extensive Denture Options

Our practice is proud to offer three primary forms of dentures crafted in our office to meet your unique dental needs. During your initial visit, Dr. Mandel and his team will determine how many teeth you have missing and which of our restorative options fits your smile best. Our extensive denture offerings include:

Full Dentures: Full dentures, also called complete dentures, are intended to replace an entire arch of teeth. Complete dentures can replace either one entire arch or the arches for your upper and lower jaws. Typically, they're composed of porcelain or ceramic teeth placed into a pink acrylic base to mirror your smile's natural appearance and feel. In addition, complete dentures can be removed so that cleaning is simple.

Partial Dentures: If you still have remaining natural teeth, partial dentures can be your perfect solution. Partial dentures, like complete dentures, are made of porcelain or ceramic teeth that sit on a body-safe acrylic base. However, they aren't meant to replace every tooth and can comfortably fit next to your remaining teeth for a natural appearance. Partial dentures are also removable, making cleaning and caring for them easy.

Implant-Supported Dentures: If you're looking for a more permanent tooth replacement option, implant-supported dentures may meet your needs. Implant-supported dentures are permanent dentures anchored to your jawbone using dental implants. You can expect the same quality and appearance as complete dentures, except they're not removable and require you to clean them as you would your natural teeth.

Preparing Your Smile for Dentures

During your initial visit, our Dr. Mandel may determine that you require one or more teeth to be extracted before safely receiving your new dentures. Our practice is proud to offer gentle pretreatment tooth extractions to help you get the care you need without referring you out. We take a gentle approach to tooth extractions and work hard to ensure that you feel comfortable during the procedure and that your smile heals without complications. Additionally, we can have your dentures ready immediately following tooth extractions.

Dentures FAQs

It's normal to have various questions about our denture services. That's why our friendly dental staff is here to answer any that you may have. Some frequently asked questions about dentures include:

How will my new dentures feel?
Although not every patient has the same experience, it's normal to have a few weeks of adjustment after you've received your dentures. Your smile's muscles need time to get used to the feel of your dentures, and you may experience some minor irritation or soreness. However, the more you wear your dentures, the more they'll feel like a normal part of your smile.

Are there any foods I should avoid with dentures?
After placing your dentures, our team strongly encourages you to eat soft foods. We recommend you continue with this dietary restriction until you feel comfortable eating with your dentures. After that, you can eat almost everything you ate before receiving your dentures.

Will dentures change how I speak?
Pronouncing certain words may take practice once you've received your dentures. If you experience a severe impact on your speech, contact us, and we'll carefully look over them to ensure your dentures are fitting properly.
