Dr. Mandel utilizes the latest technology in minimally-invasive surgery for recessed gums.  Rather than a traditional surgery involving a scalpel, stitches, and a long, painful recovery of up to three weeks, the Pinhole® Surgical Technique(PST) involves no cutting, no grafting, and an incredibly speedy recovery – oftentimes overnight.  The Pinhole® technique costs about the same as a normal grafting surgery, so if you have gum recession, rather than getting a filling or undergoing the traditional grafting surgery, consider the Pinhole technique instead!

What is this procedure and who is it for?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a less invasive oral procedure invented to correct the symptoms that come with a lack of oral care that leads to gum recession. By using a specific technique, developed by John Chao, DDS, MADG, the gum is loosened with special tools allowing the tissue to be moved and manipulated enough to cover the portions of the mouth that used to have gum tissue present. The tissue that has been moved is then supported by collagen which allows to gum to remain stable as it heals. This ensures full root coverage, giving patients healthier gums and a more beautiful smile.

What is gum recession?

Unsure if you are a candidate for having the Pinhole Surgical Technique completed? PST is recommended for those who suffer from gum recession. Gum recession occurs when the gum is no longer healthy enough to cover the entire root of the tooth.

Common causes for gum recession are:

  • Aggressive teeth brushing or flossing
  • Genetics
  • Uncommon tooth positioning
  • Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)
  • Intense trauma to gum tissue
  • Poor oral hygiene

What is the recovery time of PST?

There is little if any recovery time for the Pinhole Surgical Technique. Due to this procedure being minimally invasive, the patient is able to get back to their daily life almost immediately after the surgery is completed.
